Linda Sun, 41, former aide to New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, and her husband Chris Hu, 40, were charged on Tuesday with acting as an agent for the Chinese government, according to Reuters.
Sun and her husband are alleged to have benefited from millions of dollars in compensation and gifts from the Chinese government for Sun’s clandestine efforts to influence U.S. policy to the benefit of the PRC.
In return for Sun’s efforts, Chinese government representatives allegedly handled millions of dollars in transactions for her husband, who has business interests in China. The couple used some of these funds to buy extravagant perks, such as a 2024 Ferrari Roma sports car, in addition to properties in Long Island and Honolulu to the tune of approximately $6 million, prosecutors said.
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn claim Sun “blocked representatives of the Taiwanese government from meeting with officials and sought to arrange for a high-level New York state official to visit China,” according to Reuters.
The couple plead not guilty to the criminal charges brought before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo at their arraignment in Brooklyn, after their arrest on Tuesday morning.
Interestingly, this comes on the heels of a similar case regarding Wang Shujun, who was found guilty of acting as a foreign agent in the same Brooklyn federal court, less than a month ago. Mr. Wang could face up to 25 years in prison for his collaboration with officials in China’s Ministry of State Security, an intelligence service, according to Reuters. How this case will influence the Sun case remains to be seen. Mr. Wang’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 9, 2025.
